Mac's NFL Draft Grades

Obviously it takes at least 3 years to grade a draft, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to grade it now!  One thing I hate is the people who grade drafts with all Bs, two As and one D.  That's lame and doesn't tell me anything.  These are just first impressions, so let's take a look at the 2009 NFL Draft...

AFC East
Buffalo Bills
Picks: LB Aaron Maybin, C Erick Wood, CB Jarius Byrd, OL Andy Levitre, TE Shawn Nelson, S Nic Harris, CB Cary Haris, DB Ellis Lankster
Thought: With two first round picks, I thought they'd do more.  I also thought Byrd was a bit of a reach with better coners on the board.
Positives: Maybin to get after the QB, and Nelson is a quality TE
Negative: Wood?  In the first round with Unger on the board?  And where is the replacement for Petters?
Grade: D

Miami Dolphins
Picks: CB Vontae Davis, QB Pat White, CB Sean Smith, WR Patrick Turner, WR Brian Hartline, TE John Nalbone, S Chris Clemons, OT Andrew Gardner, LB J.D. Folsom
Thought: Davis a problem off the feild?  Reach for Pat White at top of second.  But Sean Smith is hugh to match up against Moss and Owens.
Positives: Help in the secondary and the passing game.
Negative: No pass rusher, defensive tackle or interior line help
Grade: C

New England Patriots
Picks: S Patrick Chung, DT Ron Brace, CB Darius Butler, OT Sebastian Vollmer, WR Brandon Tate, LB Tyrone McKenzie, G Rich Ohrnberger, C George Bussey, DT Myron Pryor, LS Jacob Ingram, WR Julian Edelman, DT Darryl Richard
Thought: The Pats agreed with me that the best value was the second round, plus added 2 second round picks next year!
Positives: Butler will step in and play well, Brace and Chung need some work but could be great, got youth on the O-Line
Negative: Vollmer?  Had better options, also Tate has some serious character problems and there were better WRs
Grade: A

New York Jets
Picks: QB Mark Sanchez, RB Shonn Green, G Matt Slauson
Thought: Kept next year's first round pick when trading up 12 picks for their franchise quarterback
Positives Sanchez, a possible franchise quarterback, Green can replace Thomas Jones
Negative: Not many players, for the 3rd year in a row... also where is the replacement for Coles?
Grade: B

AFC North
Baltimore Ravens
Picks: OT Michael Oher, DE/LB Paul Kruger, CB Lardarius Webb, LB Jason Phillips, TE Davon Drew, RB Cedric Peerman
Thought: Got great value on Oher, Kruger and Phillips!
Positives: Oher, Kruger will step in and play.  Oher well keep Flacco healty for years
Negative: No wepons for Flacco, had shots at quality TEs and WRs, even late.
Grade: B

Cincinnati Bengals
Picks: OT Andre Smith, LB Rey Maualuga, DE Michael Johnson, TE Chase Coffman, C Jonathan Luigs, P Kevin Huber, CB Morgan Trent, RB Bernard Scott, RB Fui Vakapuna, DT Clinton McDonald, WR Freddie Brown
Thought: Didn't reach, got great value on most of their picks.
Positives: Smith, Maualuga, Johnson, Coffman, Luigs could all start in the very near future.
Negatives: Attitude and work ethic with both Smith and Johnson, also is Brown good enough to help at WR, doubt it.
Grade: A

Cleveland Browns
Picks: C Alex Mack, WR Brian Robinski, WR Mohamed Massaquoi, DE Veikune, LB Kaluka Maiva, CB Don Carey, CB Coye Francies, RB James Davis
Thought: Didn't get enough for trading back 3 times in round one - Mangenius' first pick of his regime is a center, again (Mangold)
Positives: Added weapons on offense and a steal late in Francies
Negative: No great athletes, no top end talent all solid.
Grade: C

Pittsburgh Steelers
Picks: DT Ziggy Hood, OL Krag Urbik, WR Mike Wallace, CB Keenan Lewis, CB Joe Burnett, RB Frank Summers, DT Ra'Shon Harris, C A.Q. Shipley, TE David Johnson
Thought: Reached for Hood?  Also didn't address their OL enough, remember Big Ben getting hit all the time last year?
Positives: Youth on the DLine is good
Negative: Not a lot of immediate help and not enough on the offensive line or the secondary.
Grade: D

AFC South
Houston Texans
Picks: LB Brian Cushing, DE Connor Barwin, G Antoine Caldwell, CB Glover Quin, TE Anthony Hill, TE James Casey, DB Brice McCain, DB Troy Nolan
Thought: They're building one of the best young front seven defense.
Positives: Cushing and Barwin will start, Casey will give them more options on offense.
Negative: Not enought DBs, or WRs... why the two TE with Owens on the roster?
Grade: C

Negative: Need more depth and youth on the offensive line
Grade: D

Jacksonville Jaguars
Picks: OT Eugene Monroe, OT Eben Britton, DT Terrance Knighton, CB Derek Cox, WR Mike Thomas, WR Jarett Dillard, TE Zach Miller, RB Rashad Jennings, WR Tiquan Underwood.
Thought: Fixing the O-Line was a major priority... check.  Jennings will be great with Jones-Drew in a year or two.
Positives: Monroe, Britton will start immediately, and mabye for 10 years.  Monroe might be the best tackle.
Negative: To late on the Wide Outs, still a need.
Grade: B

Negative: can Marks replace Haynesworth?  Is Britt a first round WR?
Grade: C

AFC WEST
Denver Broncos
Picks: RB Knowshon Moreno, LB Robert Ayers, CB Alphonso Smith, S Darcel McBath, TE Richard Quinn, S David Bruton, G Seth Olsen, WR Kenny McKinley, QB Tom Bradstater, C Blake Schlueter
Thought: It's not the players it's what the Broncos gave up to get them.  Lost 2 3rds, a 1st next year... Didn't trade well at all.
Positive: Moreno will finally give the Bronocos a great running game again, Ayers and Smith can both play.
Negative: Where was the help for the defense?  Excpecially the front seven? 6 of 10 picks on offense?
Grade: D

Kansas City Chiefs
Picks: DE Tyson Jackson, DT Alex Magee, CB Donald Washington, OL Colin Brown, WR Quentin Lawrence, RB Jarvarris Williams, TE Jake O'Connell, K Ryan Succop
Thought: Have to count Matt Cassel in this draft, but how did you pass on Curry?
Positives: Got a QB, and continued to build the D-Line
Negative: Should have taken Curry, and some options for Cassel.
Grade: D

Oakland Raiders
Picks: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, S Michael Mitchell, DE Matt Shaughnessy, WR Louis Murphy, DE Slade Norris, DE Stryker Sulak, TE Brandon Myers
Thought: Why not trade down and take DHB?  If you like him that much, get a flipping 6th and trade back to 15... he'd still be there.
Positives: DHB could be great, but that's a big bet.  I like Murphy he might be a sleeper
Negatives: Mitchell in the second round was hilarilus... where is the OL help?  Will Russell have time to throw it deep to DHB?
Grade: F

San Diego Chargers
Picks: DE/LB Larry English, G Louis Vasquez, DT Vaughn Martin, G Tyronne Green, RB Gartrell Johnson, CB Brandon Hughes, S Kevin Ellison, WR Demetrius Byrd
Thought: I had the Bolts taking a pass rusher the whole time, English and Merriman could be a nightmare for offenses
Positives: English, Martin and I like the Johnson pick as well... a new Micheal Turner?
Negative: Could have done a better job adding O-Line Depth
Grade: C

Dallas Cowboys
Picks: LB Jason Williams, OT Rober Brewster, QB Stephen McGee, LB Victor McGee, LB Victor Butler, DE Brandon Williams, CB DeAngelo Smith, S Michael Hamlin, K David Buehler, LB Stephen Hodge, TE John Phillips, CB Mike Mickens, WR Manuel Johnson
Thought: No pick in the first two rounds.. ouch, paid too much for Roy Williams

Negative: Still have holes at saftey
Grade: A

Grade:

B

NFC South

Picks: DT Peria Jerry, S Williams Moore, CB Chris Owens, DE Lawrence Sidbury, William Middleton, OT Garrett Reynolds, LB Spencer Adkins, DT Vance Walker
Thought: Getting Sidbury when they did was great value, the really worked on they're defense.
